BBC SOS Extreme Rescues - 2024 - 2025

During 2024, I worked as a self shooting producer and director, following the North Wales Mountain Rescue and Coastguard Teams. Over the course of 9 months, I was on call to capture the teams as they responded to call outs, followed the rescues and filmed intimate interviews with both the rescuers and the causalities.

As the senior self shooting PD, my main roles and responsibilities were

  • Camera and Sound - During a call out, I would be the sole crew member and so was responsible for capturing every part of the rescue, This included organizing and deploying GoPro bodycams, managing remote mics and filming with an A7iii rig.

  • Editorial Decision Making - The nature of the filming meant I had to be quick, made key editorial decisions as the rescue unfolded and also be fit enough to film all angles in very difficult locations and weathers.

  • Directing studio interviews - The interview element also required skills in studio lighting and multicam set ups.

  • Managing relationships - The role also required me to develop strong relationships with all our contributors. Working with the agencies meant I had to gain and build their trust so that I could fully cover their work and the delicate and sensitive nature of the filming also meant I had to develop strong relationships with the casualties and their families as well as put in place comprehensive consent protocols.

  • Edit Producing - As director I also edit produced a portion of the final stories
